Trouble saving bookmarks

I've read that once upon a time VLC included the ability to save bookmarks via saved playlists. I see that it appears as though the bookmarks are recorded within the playlist files, but when I open the saved playlist in VLC, the bookmarks do not appear to load.
It'd be super cool if that worked in 1.1!
