Changing settings only takes effect after closing VLC

Hi.
It seems like changing -at least some of- the VLC settings in the Preferences window only takes effect until the next time you open VLC; for example, audio normalization.
I'm using VLC 1.1.0 RC but I guess this issue has been present since the pre versions. I don't know if this is the intended behavior, though.
