Flash videos drop sound every 6-15 seconds

Postby gnosygnus » 16 May 2010 18:46

Hi all. As per subject, flash videos (.flv) drop sound every 6-15 seconds.

Audio will have a temporary blip of silence every 6-15 seconds. It continues to drop sound for the remainder of playback. Video will play fine.

For example, in the uploaded file http://www.mediafire.com/?c2immrfwzet, the sound drops at the following points: 6,13,20,26,33, etc..
For another file, the sound drops at 14, 28, etc..
This same file plays fine on 1.0.0 Goldeneye. It also works on 0.8.6i. It doesn't work on pre-2 and pre-4.

I've tried this on at least 5 different Flash Videos. I believe they are all from youtube.
I've not run into this issue with other video formats.
I'm on Windows SP3.

I hope this is enough information. Thanks

Okay. I created a ticket here: http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/3642. I just copied and pasted the text from my post.
Let me know if you need other information. Thanks.

It's playing fine for me with the latest nightly build vlc-1.1.0-rc-20100519-0202-win32.

Thanks for checking.

I've tried the nightly vlc-1.1.0-rc-20100519-0202-win32-debug.zip (and also the 20100519-0202-win32.7z) and it still drops

I've tried the nightly on another Windows XP machine. It also skips, but the interval is longer (approximately 18 seconds)
This same machine plays the flv fine without dropping on 1.0 Goldeneye.

Have you played back the entire video? If you have, and it still doesn't drop, I will see if I can find another flv file.

Okay. I tried a few more things.

I've done the following on my main machine (not the other XP machine I mention below).

I went through the three routines listed below. In each case, I listened to the file/link for 1 minute.

- ran VLC media player 1.1.0-rc-20100519-0202 The Luggage;
chose "Open Network Stream"
recorded dropped time; I record the second it dropped below each link
the time is variable between playbacks; in other words, during one playback the dropped times were 18;30;46;59; during another they were 19;31;49;1:02;

Code: Select all

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6lg9xAMoFto -18;33;44;57; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ty41BuLsc1A -6;12;20;26;32;39;46;54;1:00 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CyklQsElw6s -18;30;46;59; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvwK-3cQ6gE -18;26;32;39;45;52;59
- ran VLC media player 1.1.0-rc-20100519-0202 The Luggage
chose "Open File"
Each file demonstrates the same dropping behavior. I can't guarantee it is the same file as the youtube link. I believe they are (especially since these are less popular and have fewer copies).

Just in case, I've uploaded the other 3 files here (the first one is the same):

- ran VLC media player 1.0.0 Goldeneye
chose "Open File"
Each of the 4 files play fine.

I'm hoping this is enough to reproduce something. Thanks.

I'm hoping this is enough to reproduce something.
I'm sorry but I can't reproduce the problem, neither with the "Open Network Stream" option nor with the "Open File" one, all files are playing fine to me.
Sounds like a driver issue.

Thanks for looking. But what do you mean by seeking problem? Are you seeing messages like mine below, and saying this is a seeking problem (sorry, seeking is vague to me)
I'm sorry but I can't reproduce the problem, neither with the "Open Network Stream" option nor with the "Open File" one, all files are playing fine to me.
Sounds like a driver issue.
Okay. Again, thanks for looking. FYI: I've tried this on three different computers: a Dell machine provided by work; a laptop with a factory restore image; a custom built machine. It skips in each one of the three. I haven't looked at the drivers because the same file plays fine on 1.0.5 but not 1.1+

I've narrowed down the issue to a DirectX Audio Output issue that affects flv files on 1.1+ not 1.0.5. Note: there may be other permutations involved (different versions, audio outputs, file formats, etc).

For the purposes of the comparison, I've done the following:
- Set Audio to DirectX Audio
Originally this was set to Default, but it looks like VLC selects DirectX Audio. I explicitly set it to DirectX Audio.
- Video=Dummy video interface
Video makes no difference.
- Messages turned on and verbosity to 2 before opening the file
- File used: http://www.mediafire.com/?c2immrfwzet
- File played for first 30 seconds only (will drop sound twice within this period of time)

For 1.0.5, I used http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... -win32.zip
For 1.1+, I used http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... -win32.zip

In 1.0.5, there are some complaints about resampling, but they are few (<20)

Code: Select all

main warning: buffer is 40382 in advance, triggering downsampling main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (-41403)
In 1.1, there are many complaints (>2000). The messages are different, so I don't know if 1.0.5 had the same issues and was not announcing them.

Code: Select all

main warning: buffer is 19828077084 late, triggering upsampling main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling
When sound gets dropped, I see this

Code: Select all

main warning: output date isn't PTS date, requesting resampling (-42297) main warning: audio drift is too big (-150987), clearing out main warning: buffer is 19850821000 late, triggering upsampling main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: mixer start isn't output start (-29210) main warning: buffer is 19850821000 late, triggering upsampling main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: buffer is 19850847122 late, triggering upsampling main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main warning: the mixer got a packet in the past (23855) main warning: buffer is 19850873244 late, triggering upsampling main warning: timing screwed, stopping resampling main debug: audio output is starving (164429), playing silence
Now, if I switch Audio output to Win32 waveout, I get the same number of "timing screwed, stopping resampling" messages. However it doesn't drop sound (at least so far). Note: it seems you need to restart VLC for the Audio output change to take effect.

Finally, even with Win32 waveout, it seems that VLC (both 1.0.5 and 1.1.0) give soft popping sounds every several seconds. You have to listen hard to notice them. For comparison, Windows Media Player does not.

So, summary of incident:
- DirectX Audio not working same between 1.0.5 and 1.1
- Switching to Win32 waveout for 1.1 seems to work (will not know until I test more files).

Lotesdelere: Can you confirm if you get "audio output is starving" when you play the file with DirectX Audio? Or the same volume of "late, triggering upsampling" messages?

Work fine. But seeking problem.
Thanks for looking. But what do you mean by seeking problem? Are you seeing messages like mine below, and saying this is a seeking problem (sorry, seeking is vague to me)
I mean that When I move the slider to the middle of the video, playback freezes for 20-30 seconds and then playback continues from the place where I moved the slider.

So i mean seeking problem is long freeze.

I do not know this bug or a feature of vlc. In youtube flash based player seeking very fast.

Okay. Thanks for clarification. I was unable to reproduce the seeking issue when playing the file directly from my hard drive (tried different video outputs). I did get it when using "Open Network Stream". However, I'm guessing that is normal because youtube leverages its own api to get the pseudo-instantaneous seek. (VLC has to buffer all the content until the seek point?)

I confirm that official RC1 build and the latest nightly build (vlc-1.1.0-rc3-20100611-0202-win32.exe) have sound dropping issues. The latest build seems to be working fine for about 20 minutes then short audio interruptions appear again. There no difference what FLV file you watch. Seek position is not important. Restarting VLC doesn't solve the problem. It strange but after closing VLC and waiting for about 10 minutes then starting VLC again FLV files are played without any problems during the next 20 minutes :)

Thanks for looking at this.

Most of my .flv files are < 5 minutes. I don't have any around 20 min. When the sound starts dropping for me, it's usually within the first 15 seconds (though I've had some files go as long as 1 minute before they start dropping).

Also, is this behavior occuring with "Win32 waveout" (as opposed to Default/DirectXAudio)?

I've had better luck with the flv files when using Win32 waveout. DirectXAudio/Default will always drop sound periodically. Win32 waveout usually does not. However, there are times when it drops just like DirectXAudio: it's sort of flakey.

For example, last time I looked at this, I had this behavior:
- played flv1: dropped audio
- stopped flv1. played flv2. didn't drop audio
- played flv1: didn't drop audio.

Not as strange as waiting 10 minutes though :)

I set to Default mode which uses DirectX for audio output in most cases. But explicitly switching to DirectX or Win32 waveout doesn't solve the problem.

Version 1.1.0 rc1 that is available from the main page doesn't have 20 minutes limit for normal playing. It drops audio about every 5 seconds during all the time after starting the player. I think something was changed in latest builds to make the issue less annoying.

But explicitly switching to DirectX or Win32 waveout doesn't solve the problem
FYI: I tried both http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/win ... -win32.zip and http://download.videolan.org/pub/videol ... c-win32.7z.

When I brought down rc3, the Default (DirectX) output would drop sound.
However, when I switched to Win32 waveout, it did not. (I find that restarting VLC after switching outputs is necessary.)
After I brought down rc1, it didn't drop sound, because my output was still set at Win32 waveout.

Just to be explicit (forgive me: I like being explicit and verbose):
- Downloaded rc3
- Ran VLC
- Opened .flv file. file dropped sound
- Opened Tools -> Preferences -> Audio. Output module was "Default"
- Changed Output to "Win32 waveout..."
- "Save" Preferences
- Exited VLC
- Reopened VLC
- Loaded .flv file. file no longer dropped sound

That said, I have noticed that this behavior is flaky, and sometimes it does drop sound even when Win32 waveout. I would say the percentages are as follows:
- if DirectX/Default: drops sound every 6-15 seconds 100% of the time
- if Win32 Waveout: drops sound every 6-15 seconds 10% of the time (random; can't reproduce reliably. sometimes restarting app works; one time it was "switching" flv files)

I still think this is a regression bug between 1.1 and 1.0.5. I do hope it gets fixed, but the Win32 waveout workaround made the bug less a show-stopper.
Hope this helps.
