What are the critical headers values in a video file

Hey all,

I need to merge different video while play-back without transcoding them. I was wondering If any one could tell What are the critical parameters that VLC looks while playing a video?.

Cant we trick VLC by applying filters to incoming videos and making them same in Frame size, frame rate etc. so that VLC packets from different videos as part of the same file?

That depends on the video codec. There is no generic answer.
