SMB url to acces media on network volume . . .

Hi Folks,
I'm trying to get directly load a network SMB resource (mp3 file on Synology NAS) using python-vlc and have not been able to figure out the correct URL format - I think. To remove my somewhat questionable Python skills from the mix, I've dropped down to the command line interface (MacOS) and have tried a number of permutations of ip,port, path, credentials - all to no avail.
Based on the CLI output,it looks like I am accessing the correct VLC lib - I'm getting this "VLC media player 3.0.21 Vetinari (revision 3.0.21-1-gd45e6164ef)" as the response, before the errors. Also based on the fact that I can mount the SMB directory locally and play the files with VLC, I think that part is working, which points strongly towards my URL being the culprit.
I've poked at the docs and applied both GoogleFoo and GPTFoo, but have not been able to figure this out.
Suggestions or examples would be welcome - thanks.
