audio frequency spectrum analyser

Hi,

I'd like to display an audio frequency spectrum analyser and was wandering how to do it...I'm assuming it's possible because I've seen VLC with audio visualiser plugins. Any information about how to get the frequency bin values would be appreciated, or even an example of a visualiser plugin.
