n00b: Using VLC to build a subtitle-screening box

Postby Silks » 07 Mar 2014 13:28

I'm looking into the concept of building a machine specifically for screening subtitles in a movie theater.
The theater in question has a DCP unit that gives out timecode in LTC format. Basically, I'd like to take a small computer (Mac hardware, not necessarily OSX) with a BNC input, hooked up to a small projector, and be able to screen timed subtitles in sync with the incoming LTC timecode.
I also need to be able to tweak font size, onscreen position etc.
It seems like VLC can handle pretty much all of these tasks, right?
As I said, I'm new to this... Any advice regarding choice of PCI card, as well as general advice, will be greatly appreciated.

P.S. Is this the right forum for this question?

Well you posted in the LibVLC forum, so presumably you are asking about LibVLC in particular rather than VLC itself...

Do you want to be notified of a particular subtitle and when it should be displayed, so you can have your own app display it on your projector? I'm interested in doing something similar, but that can't be done through LibVLC.

As I said, I'm quite new to this... How would you go about doing it? Would love your input.

I would add the functionality to vlc and expose it via LibVLC if I knew how, but I'm afraid I don't. That's why I was interested in your question. ;-)

Oh okay, I'll keep looking :^)
Again, any input on how to go about this would be greatly appreciated.
