Subtitles when using deinterlacing

I noticed subtitles start to flicker when used in combination with deinterlacing and also noticed this feature request: http://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/2578
Since it looks like there's no easy fix for this I was just wondering how others have worked around this?

Does anyone have any advise on what to do, or what not to do?
