VLS- Is it required to have write access to the DVD Drive

Is it required to have a write access to the DVD Drive that connected to my linux box to be able to stream a DVD file in mpeg-2 TS format
I don't think write access is needed.
btw, you should use VLC instead of VLS to stream DVDs.
