Discussion on the (deprecated) VideoLAN Server application as well as the miniSAPserver stream announcer. This is not about VLC!

Can anyone explain to me what SAP is?

I've read in the howto's and I've searched on the forums but I can't figure out what SAP is.

I would appreciate if someone could explain it to me.

SAP is a protocol to announce Internet multicast conferencing sessions. A conference is announced by periodically multicasting a UDP announcement packet to a multicast address and port.
A SAP "listener" can pick them up and act as a program guide. VLC has a built-in SAP listener.
