Media Server: VLC Setup

Postby lihimsidhe » 12 Aug 2008 06:17

Mission: To set up VLC as my primary media server to stream media to my PS3 and PSP.

I would like to say that I didn't make this topic blind. Meaning, I didn't decide to post it without doing a great deal of research myself. I've come across a multitude of media servers ranging from Nero, Tversity, Google, etc. However, I've just recently read that VLC can act as a media server and since VLC is the most versatile media server I've ever come across....

...and it can be installed on a CF PSP (which I have)....

I would like any and all help on making VLC my primary media server.

So that's what I'm here for. Let me explain my current set up:

-Windows Media Player 11. This is my current server. While it was easy to set up, I'm running into way too many 'unsupported format/data' errors to make this practical anymore.

-Firewall. I'm not Neo or anything but I know enough how to work my firewall to allow/disallow the programs I want. So that's not an issue.

-Wireless Network/Router. I can play online games with the PS3 just fine. I can remote play with the PSP just fine... when I'm in my house. When I try to remote play from another network, the connection times out. I also use a torrent program called Vuze and while I do eventually torrent the content I want, I always have a 'NAT problem' indicator. I don't know if this info has anything to do with media serving, but they are two issues I have noticed. I'm reluctant to mess around with the router since it's my roomate's but if I know what I'm doing, I will.

Some of you may already have this set up. Some of you may not but can provide a working solution. Still some of you may have neither but would like to help. Despite all those variables, there's nothing wrong with some incentive, right?

Check out my signature. Some people would call me an artist. If any single person provides me with the aid neccessary to set up VLC as my PS3 and PSP media server, they will receive one free commission of their choice. If you want to know the details, feel free to contact me. Someone helps me get my media nonsense in order and I get to be a bit more productive as a result. Everyone wins.

:)

i already have dlna setup as i currently use windows media player 11 as my media server. however i'd like to use VLC as my media server but the process isn't as straight forward as i would have hoped. i have explored VLC and i know it can do network streams but i'm really lost when it comes to actually implementing the player into a media server. :(

We are now working on developing VLC as a DLNA server :D

However, now, you can try to use VLC to transcode and stream all your streams.

What are your requisitories ? What format can you read on your PSP? on your PS3?

As requested here are all the availible formats for the devices I use:

ps3 video types

Memory Stick Video Format
MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (AAC LC)
MP4 file format
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
MPEG-2 TS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2)
AVI
Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
Motion JPEG (µ-Law)
AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
DivX / Xvid
WMV (Enable playback in System Settings)
VC-1 (WMA Standard V2)

psp video types

MPEG-4 Simple Profile (AAC)
H.264/MPEG-4 AVC Main Profile (CABAC) (AAC) and Baseline Profile (AAC)

helio video types

MP3, AAC, WMA, MPEG-4, H.264, VOD, MOD

MPEG 4 and H.264 are the formats that span across all three devices.

One thing I'm confused on: if VLC is not a DLNA media server yet, how can it stream to my PS3? I'm guessing that VLC has to work in conjunction with a DLNA enabled media player to get that to work, but that's just a guess.

Also, can VLC encode videos into another format? Because if I can use VLC to do that, then I can just convert any video into the above mentioned formats.

Thanks in advance.

That would be great, are there some news about?

I am very interested in using VLC as a DLNA server for PS3 and at a GoVideo UPNP Player D2730
I would also be willing to test and give feedback with a early version with the platforms I have.
I have access to Linux/OSX/Windows as servers to test all platforms as well.

Paul.
