youtube.lua no longer grabbing best quality version?

I don't know how long this has been happening, but I tried viewing a YouTube video today in VLC & the resolution is always 640x360, even though the source video is available in 1080p on the YouTube website. I tried with a bunch of other 1080p video with the same result: VLC codec info shows 640x360 video resolution.
Did something change on YouTube's side that broke the youtube.lua script? Anyone else experiencing this?

Use the latest VLC version or even better the latest VLC nightly build:
http://nightlies.videolan.org/
Check following settings in VLC preferences: Tools > Preferences > Show settings=All >
> Input/Codecs: Preferred video resolution
> Input/Codecs \ Demuxers \ Adaptive: ...

Thank you for your input. I tried the latest stable (3.0.11) and the most recent nightly build from the 4.x branch too, then - like you suggested - checked the settings (were already correct btw.), but still no luck. VLC opens 720p by all means, instead of the 1080p one. I even replaced youtube.lua to the latest available from the github repo. Any other suggestions, please?
