Possible: Change volume of left/right speaker independently?

I saw in the readme that the volume of all the speakers can be changed with volume.set.
I would like to know if I can control the volume of each speaker independently.

I got the idea because I currently have some music encoded so that when listening with headphones, the sound slowly moves back and forth between the left and right side. This is supposed to good for relaxation. I would like to script VLC to do this on the fly with any media file if possible.
