Extensions for iOS, Android, Windows Phone

Postby dond » 01 Jan 2016 21:24

Hi all,

I'm a newbie looking into an idea I had and have some general questions about vlc extensions.

I installed VLC on my Android phone (no root), but could find a way to add extensions. For example the Subtitle-Downloader addon VLsub (by exebetche).

1) Are extensions written for one platform (e.g. linux) working on all other platforms as well? => Windowx X, OSX, BSD and specially Android, iOS & Windows Phone?
2) Could a plugin like the VLsub be implemented in such a cross-plattform way?
3) What are the limitations?
4) I did search the net for the answers to these questions, but didn't find anything. Where (outside this forum) can I find this and more information if I want to get started creating a cross platform addon?

Thanx a lot for your insights!

Cheers,
d.

I could be wrong, but my understanding was that extensions were not supported by VLC on Android because it needs Lua which is not present on Android.

Windows, Linux, OS X etc all use a Lua-based scripting system so most scripts are cross-platform compatible amongst Lua-enabled versions of VLC, but some features (modules) are specific to certain operating systems and types of script.

vlc-android does support lua scripts but it's limited as far as I understood.
Playlists, meta and reader scripts work on vlc-android but not extension esp. ones with UI.
