hello all. thanks JoeTheZombie for the nice skin. it's most aesthetically pleasing!

in the next version, would you please implement the speed controls?
Image

also, i have modified it to greyscale so i could learn more about all this stuff:

and would like to share with everyone if that's alright with you (but i don't know how exactly).
maybe we can collaborate on making this skin different color shades as well?

Different colored glow effects sound like a great idea! Let`s try to keep the different incarnations of this skin together... Perhaps we can release it as a "skin pack" with several different color options.

Note that I am working on a newer version of this skin, which can be found here (uncompleted work in progress). This new version requires a nightly trunk build of VLC as it relies on features available only in VLC .9

Mainly, this version allows for maximizing the window, and allows for horizontal resizing.

I'm also toying with having a separate window for the playlist, as the video playback bug on switching layouts looks like it isn't going to be fixed any time soon.

As I’ve said before, I really like the design and layout of this skin. But I was wondering if you could make the minimal mode slightly more compact (a little less horizontal).

As for the changing of skin colors, would it be a good idea to add overlay support (Hue/Saturation/ect) to a skin? That way you won’t have to make skins in different colors, the user can make these changes.

Just an idea.

Yes, the compact mode will be much more compact than it is now. As far as overlay... I don't think that is currently possible with VLC.

Nice! And thanks!

Well then, I propose this to the developers: could you guys add a feature to apply overlays to just the skin, or a color slider kind of like what Windows media player has?

Great skin. Is it possible to get a keyboard shortcut for Open->Quick File Open? The classic interface has it mapped to ctrl-o. I can't find it in the key mapping, is this a skin property?

Also, I'd like to second being able to hide the playlist section...

Hello. Work continues on this skin, but this and all future releases will require VLC .9 to function. This new version:
  • removed the playlist bar
  • Full horizontal and vertical resizing
  • full maximize/restore/minimize functionality
  • true compact mode
  • faster/slower functions on either side of the time slider

To answer the above question, the skin DTD does not provide for hotkeys.

wow, that's awesome! i tried installing a .9 trunk build but it didn't work right. no problem though, i'll just wait for everything to evolve a bit more until attempting different color skins. keep up the great work, man.

by the way, what movie is that on the screengrab?

by joethezombie
Yes, the nightlies are never guaranteed to work so it's best to wait for a release version of .9. For the adventuresome, I've been testing with 20070129.

The movie in the screengrab is Howl's Moving Castle, and of course South Park in the compact mode.

Very nice! And thanks for adding the faster/slower function. As soon as I fix my little playlist problem, I’m switching back to this skin.

I was also wondering if there is anything on the player that will display the title of the video/song, like in the compact mode next to the time.

Those new features are amazing. I'll test them a bit more later.

Awesome skin!

One thing I'm missing is would it be possible to add the song/video title display in compact mode as well?

Didn’t I ask this question a few posts back? Anyway, I would like to see this added if it’s not too difficult, even though I still haven’t fixed this stupid playlist problem that I have.

I can put the title on the other side of the time display on the compact mode, but where do you suggest placing it while in "full" mode?

Actually I didn't really mind having it in the original where the playlist was at the top. but that's just me. Someone mentioned a toggle before? dunno if that's possible.

For “full” mode, I wouldn’t mind if it replaced where it says “VLC media player” at the top-left corner of the player.

Thanks for taking suggestions; things like this will help in the progress of any skin.

Can this be a toggle feature or make it a separate window as a playlist that can be toggled. It's a giant detraction having the filename plastered on a skin or scrolling text in client when you're trying to focus on a video.

Please for the love of god, no

No? Why not? It would also be a plus if it showed the name of the file in the taskbar instead of the name of the player, but oh well, not every idea will be a great one. :(

Firstly thanks for this topic.

All the efforts I made, I can't manage to add my video files without the full path info into a playlist. In the case of wmp11 skin, yes it displays just "file names" for mp3s but for video files it display full path, like "c:\myvidoefiles\friends\s03-09.avi" and this is really boring when playing this kind of files.

Any help appreciated.

Well the skin designer really doesn't have much control over how the playlist is displayed. We can choose a "tree" view, or a "flat" view. What is displayed in these views is controlled by VLC, not the skin.

Additionally, this has already been covered previously in this very topic, so no need to bring it up again.

Thank you JoeTheZombie for the reply. And I like your design very much. It's very simple to use yet comprehensive.

I wouldn't necessarily call it my design-- it's a blatant rip off of WMP11. However, it has been a great experience learning how to create skins for VLC. I'm now working on a true all new design.
