VLC 2.0.0 and speed control

In VLC 2.0.x, to control the speed/rate, you can:
- long click on next/previous buttons to skip ahead, skip back
- use the speed hotkeys + - and [ ] (finer control) and = to reset it
- show the status bar, and click on the speed label to adjust with the slider and the arrows
- use the gesture module
- customize the interface (Menu Tools) to get the speed label
- customize the interface to get the arrows
VLC 2.0.x on Windows and Linux does not show the arrows for speed on both sides of the seekbar for a few reasons:
- On a big screen, they are far away, and once you have increased/decreased the speed, you need to use the other one,
- Most people want to skip, not go faster/slower,
- There is no simple way to reset the rate,
- The arrows are duplicating the speed slider and not synchronised.

I may not be "most people" but I used the speed sliders a lot.
Especially if you have a broken index file they are very valuable.
With the new release I customized the interface so that now I have the speed controls right next to the Play button so that I think I have now a very ergonomic control bar, being:
Stop - Play - FastBW - Fast FW - Step BW - Step FW - Prev - Next - ...
I like your post, because it shows me the various ways of speed control.

I'm trying to do play a short avi clip to slow down the movement of a bird, but although the - hotkey brings up info that speed is reduced it makes no difference whatsoever to the playback speed. Please advise.

Thanks very much for your help. The status bar is perfect for this.
"show the status bar, and click on the speed label to adjust with the slider and the arrows"

As much as I love VLC and the speed control thingy I'd still like to see something that tells me how much faster than normal I am watching the video. Would make me feel twice as smart as the great unwashed when I can actually see that I am watching at twice the normal speed
Is there something I am missing and that can still be done?

Thanks for the replies so far. I have tried Tools>Customise Interface and have attempted to click and drag the faster /slower buttons down into the toolbar but they will not stay there. Should I be doing something else?
I have tried the hotkeys, they don't work either. Any more suggestions?

First reset the preferences then try again.

Can I please toss out a wild and completely uneducated guess.. This long-click feature on a USB bus is what's causing at least some of the performance issues on 2.x compared to 1.x.. In all versions of 2.x so far I have to turn the volume-control-via-mousewheel feature off to avoid stuttering and a 30% cpu hit while playing videos.
EDIT: Now that I tried it the problem first appears in v1.2.0. 1.1.9 is fine. Also probably related, VLC can't find h/w acceleration on my NV 7800GS (driver v94.24) starting in 1.2.0, it has no problem finding it in 1.1.9. Thanks.

Hi guys
I would like to adjust the Faster / Slower step rate to .33 (instead of .50)
By default, clicking the Faster button, the speed jumps to 1.50 .... I would like it to jump to 1.33
I could not find where in the settings I could make that adjustment.
Any suggestions / hints?
Thank you
dLux
(using Windows version 2.04)

YOu can use the slight speed decrease/increase for that.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my question.
"{" and "}" .... increases/decreases speed by 0.10
Thanks for supporting this program.

that increases/decreases speed function is very good, but VLC 2.08 that hotkey, when press (-),(+)
default = 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0
how to make a hotkey, from 1.0 to 4.0 (steps 0.5)?
any advice please?

Yes, how do I make it so I can play a video at 0.96 or 1.04 (useful in fixing PAL and NTSC conversions).
I used to be able to just scrollwheel the timer in a previous version and get those exact numbers... how can I do this?

Adjusting the speed in status bar using the mouse pointer (View > Status Bar): click on the playback speed in status bar to see the slider.

You can always use the command line (vlc --rate .96) or the preferences if you want to set the rate with high precision. VLC keeps 3 decimal digits internally.

I've been trying all the suggestions on here but I've had no luck. Thought I'd ask, is it possible to get playback rates in increments of .05? Such as .95 & 1.05 instead of .96 & 1.04? Being a musician sometimes I need a video pitched up or down a semitone and since there's no pitch shifter implemented in VLC a good work around is to change the playback rate by .05 per semitone with time stretching audio checked off.
