Hey,
is it possible to setup VLC so that it opens youtube links automatically? Or have a right-click menu that says "play in VLC"?

VLC can open YouTube URLs. It's more of an issue with configuring your web browser.

I know it can do it, if i didnt know i wouldnt ask for it to do it automatically, i would ask if it can do it at all.
I cant drag and drop the links in, that would have been the easiest of course, can't see why its not possible.
Copying the link and doing it via File / Open Network Stream just takes to much time. Also crappy that it plays the highest possible resolution, streaming 1080 doenst really work well.
So how could one set up internet explorer 9 to play youtube with VLC?

This is a VLC forum, not a WhateverYourBrowserIs forum. The only advice we can give here is to copy the URL in the clipboard and use Media / Open from clipboard.
Up-to-date VLC versions selects the resolution based on the configured resolution policy in the preference. The default is to take the highest.

No thats too complicated, cant believe noone requested drag and drop for streaming URLs as a feature yet...
What preferences? Youtubes or VLCs? If it is youtube do you need an account there to set this?

Drag and drop works just fine and has been working for years. But it is not that much easier than clipboard.

Doenst work for me on URLs in windows, i get a red crossed out sign on VLC if i try that.
Of course its easier, Darg an drop is:
1 click-hold, move, release
so thats just ONE click
while the other is:
right-click (1), copy link (2), VLC Media (3), Open Stream (4), right click (5), insert (6),play (7)
So that is SEVEN clicks, how is that not much more complicated than the first, and if you want to change the resolution its even more.

Works fine for me on Windows 7 just opening Youtube as a URL within VLC. Prior to 2.0 it would crash but now its working. VLC appears to have support for adding the format tag to the end of the URL, otherwise it defaults with the highest quality. For example &fmt=18 is 360p.

Up until yesterday I was able to drag and drop YouTube videos and this morning for some reason I am no longer able to do that.
Now when I try to drag a YouTube video to the VLC playlist, I get a red circle with a line through it.
What is going on here... Did some setting change and if so how do I change it back?
Thanks

Probably YouTube changed.

I am not sure I understand. How would YouTube change?
I am trying to watch videos from the same page I started watching last night. It worked then. I used to be able to drag and drop multiple YouTube videos to the VLC playlist. Now I can't. Very annoying. Is there a work around or setting that would have changed.
I just uninstalled and reinstalled vlc and all codecs. No change. Still unable to drag and drop into vlc playlist.

Did you update VLC or the web browser?

No I did not. But as I said in my previous post, I just uninstalled and reinstalled VLC. I thought maybe that would fix it. But it did not. Very strange indeed.
