no libhal.so.0

Postby chubba27 » 14 Jun 2005 17:46

Upgraded to Fedora Core 4 this morning. VLC no longer runs with the following error:

vlc: error while loading shared libraries: libhal.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

There are two files VLC can't find: libhal.so.0 and libdbus-1.so.0
There is, however, a libhal.so.1 and libdbus-1.so.1. Creating symbolic links to these files leads to the final error:

VLC media player 0.8.1 Janus
vlc: symbol lookup error: vlc: undefined symbol: hal_initialize

Anyone have any work arounds for this?

I have the exact same problem with installing vlc 0.8.1 on FC4. Searching the forums I found that another user successfully resolved this issue by installing another version of libhal (viewtopic.php?t=6563&highlight=halinitialize).

However, that is for FC2. I found a thread that says that the current vlc is not compatible with FC4 and that support will be added in a few weeks (viewtopic.php?t=9961&highlight=fc4).

However, if anyone has found a way around this problem, like different library versions, I would be interested to know.
