Thanks for the Links
but i think its not that so..
The new 200% is louder than the old 400%
i play a movie in vlc 2.0 at 200% and then i played the same movie in vlc 1.1.11 at 400%
i see the difference vlc 1.1.11 400% it is a bit Louder.

It’s non-linear now which means that for example, the difference between 100% and 150% is drastic. There middle ground is not very fine-grained.

The old scale (VLC version < 1.2) was linear: The maximum 400% was (approximately) +12dB = 20*log(4), and the alternate UI maximum of 200% was +6dB = 20*log(2).

The new scale (VLC version >= 2.0) is cubic: The maximum 200% is approximately +18dB = 20*log(2*2*2). The old maximum in the new scale would be roughly 158%, exp(ln(4)/3) to be precise.

The new 200% is louder than the old 400% ??

I don't think so . If there is no problem in my ear then i am sure old 400% is louder than new 200%

The new 200% is 6dB louder than the old 400% where software amplification is done.

Note that the file output and the S/PDIF pass-through modes do not do any software amplification. Also PulseAudio and WaveOut outputs have their own scales and amplification done by the operating system, not by VLC.

I registered here just to say that someone did their math or coding wrong. I have been missing the 200% for about a month or 2 now and it has been driving me nuts. I used VLC on linux and thought that it was the linux version that had the "400% bug" allowing me to mousewheel over the shown 200%. I have been having to turn off fans and AC to hear my movies since then. I finally decided to google it and find 4 posts where it is said that the new 200% is louder than the old 400%. I turned on my fan and AC and played the first 3 minutes of 4 different TV episodes that I have watched this week in the 2.x version. I had trouble hearing the speech in all of them. I then downloaded the 1.19 version and played the same. Oddly enough I can hear the speech just fine at 200%, but at 400% its extremely loud. There is no way that the 2.x 200% is equal or greater in actual sound output than the 400% of the old version. Whatever you guys did, undo it. That was the ONLY reason I install VLC as my only choice in players. You guys have tons of great features, but most I never use and the ones I do are typically in the built in shitty players that I could use. That extra volume that I am getting with 1.19 is what sets you guys apart from the rest for me (yes, I know others may have different reasons to use it).

Again, no response is needed for me as I only registered to say this. Just take a look at the code, do some testing and find out why me and many other users are finding that your math is not adding up to real world sound.

Try 2.1 for the volume

vlc 2.0 at 200% => wheeze speaker and hush!
VLC 1.1 volume 400% real louder
PS kubuntu 12.04, vlc 2.0.5, microlab M-1300 (5.1)

Try 2.1 for the volume
That’s even worse.

Version 2.1 only goes to 100% and goes in intervals of 12.5% (100%/8). That is not nearly fine enough; it goes from 0% to 13%, then 25%, 38, 50, 63, 88, 100, then for some reason, 113%. Eight steps is not good enough; the volume control should be more in the 5% interval range. It would provide better control (especially when watching at night), and also have much more natural numbers instead of things like 13% and 88%.

Also, the volume cannot even be changed while it is paused, so you have to first resume playing before changing the volume (which is a nuisance if the volume is too loud).

The steps will be smaller starting from tomorrow.
Only to 100% is not normal. What is your output?
Also, the volume cannot even be changed while it is paused, so you have to first resume playing before changing the volume (which is a nuisance if the volume is too loud).
This should be fixed, since it works on Pulse Audio output

I completely agree with DarkriftX..though its a 2 year old post from him..but guys u r really disappointing people..the sound level has decreased considerably..and so far it just continue to decrease..no match for vlc 1.1.11 version in terms of audio..i right now listened the same song on latest version of vlc and vlc 1.1.11 alternately..heck lot of difference one can feel.. old vlc is way more loud and clear in terms of sound..guys kindly get ur code right..people have much more expectations for vlc developers

PS: Even I registered here just to give my feedback on this so that in upcoming versions we could enjoy the old school 400%
