Problem with my VLC media player

Hi,
I need help with my .avi files. When I play a video I have a mess of green and red lines showing. Sometimes they become blurry an at other time they are very clear distinct lines. I have a mate of mine that played the same videos on their computer using the same program. They seem to work finely on their computer. Please help!
