VLC not starting under OSX 10.3.1

Hi,

I try to use VLC Player under 10.3.1 on a PB G4/400 and it doesn't work.
I get the bouncing icon, resulting in a Icon sitting in the dock without the black triangle and a right click shows "application not responding" ...

no clue, App is a fresh copy from a fresh downloaded diskimage, version is 0.6.2 (newest afaik)

any hint or help is appreciated

Jo

Everyone seems to have very different levels of success running VLC with Panther.

I for one can get the application loaded, but once I try and play a movie it opens up a stack of teensy video windows which are all semi-transparent. Closing one of the windows crashes the whole program.

I've tried everything, from reinstalls to fiddling with preferences.

The reality is, VLC .62 wasn't designed for Panther and still has many many bugs.

Is there any word on an update that might fix some of these issues?

You guys both need to delete your preferences.
To quote from the FAQ:
Changing an option in the wrong value (usually selecting a module by hand instead of letting it be selected automatically) can cause VLC to no longer start. In this case you will need to remove the preference file located in your HOME -> Library -> Preferences -> VLC.
Also delete the org.videolan.vlc.plist file in HOME -> Library -> Preferences

I've already tried deleting the preferences. But as per your request I did. Tried 0.6 again didn't work. So I deleted the preferences once more and then installed the 0.7.0 beta which claimed to have better compatibility.

Still the same problem.

Application launches fine (Nice new GUI!), open up a video file and the video window slowly fades in and is very choppy because it has launched a bunch of stacked video windows. Closing on closes them all making videos impossible to watch.

But deleting my preferences was very nolstalgic, ala my Classic OS days.

I hope we can find out what's going on. :!:

It does WHAT?
I have never ever seen or heard anything like that.
You did remove both preference files?

Where does the other preference file hide?

Do you want any other information so we can figure out what's going on?

As i said before:

Code: Select all

In this case you will need to remove the preference file located in your HOME -> Library -> Preferences -> VLC. Also delete the org.videolan.vlc.plist file in HOME -> Library -> Preferences

VLC works fine under 10.3

Just upgraded to 10.3. It is true that double-clicking VLC seems not to cause it to start.

But, by dragging a file to it -- it opens fine.

From this point forward the app opens fine.

It's probably an OSX upgrad issue in that case.

So what you are saying is that you have a completely different issue. You can't play DVDs..........

Having a Mac and "can't play something" does not qualify as: "I have the same problem"
