playing spy pen videos

I have recently bought a spy pen dvr, that for some reason when I try to watch a video directly from the drive, VLC starts then instantly stops. I dont believe that this is a hardware problem because when I do the same with realplayer or windows media player the videos play fine. When I copy and paste the video to my hard drive, then play with VLC the video plays fine.
Could this be something that a setting can fix?

info about the pen: It pretty much works just like a thumb drive or card reader
it uses a mini sd card
It connects via a mini usb cable
the files are AVI
