Banding in Video

Postby huygens1962 » 21 Jan 2012 08:54

I am trying to tweak VLC for playback and live streaming of atsc streams.

I occasionally see banding and sharp gradients such as the ones in the following screencap:

Image

This is with the setting: Tools -> Preferences -> Video -> Output (drop box) -> DirectX (DirectDraw) video output

The camera is tracking the plane; there is not a lot of movement within the frame.

What would I tweak in VLC to address this?
Or is it even a problem with VLC?

You can try to enable the video "Banding removal" filter (you probably need VLC 1.2 for that).

Yeah, I don’t see that option in 1.1.11

This reminds me a lot of something I have seem in the print world: posterization.

My display is set to 32-bit color (Windows XP Pro, 32 bit).

Would upgrading to Win 7 64-bit address this sort of problem?

You need newer VLC.
