This should be an easy fix. I already spent a couple hours searching and reading and couldn't find any help that way. I am running 1.1.11 on win 7 64bit. Screen resolution is set to 1280x768 in windows on a 26" 16:9 tv. The problem I have been having is getting any aspect ratio setting to not have any black bars at all. I found settings that worked, but am unable to save them. If i go into video settings and set "Monitor pixel aspect ratio" to 4:3, then by pressing "a" to select 2.21:1 then every video fits exactly perfect. I want to keep it like this all the time. But if I put 2.21:1 in the "source aspect ratio" box to make it the default, I get large black bars on the left and right side, then I have to press "a" to get to the other 2.21:1. Ended up changing the "monitor pixel aspect ratio" back to default, set the aspect ratio to 16:9, then set the crop to 5:3.

You can do that in preferences.

The issue is that the aspect ratio I enter in preferences is not the same aspect ratio that you can manually select by pressing the keyboard shortcut "a". I am in no way a new user to vlc, just new to the forum.
