latest VLC update has made movies unviewable on my TV

Since the update to VLC (version 1.1.12) the player's resolution is out. The boarder and the movie are almost unrecognizable when i transfer it to my attached dispalay/TV via HDMI.
all other applications are fine, only VLC, it appears dark and the boarders are distorted. every other app seems to adjust to the change (from mac-TV).
all other apps look the same as you slide them across but then adjust to the screen when they're completely transferred to the screen.
I have tried all of the settings on my mac running OS X and also on my TV (pioneer plasma 435pe)
The most frustrating thing is that it was fine on both my macs and the update affected both.
