Automated screenshots command line issue

Hi all,

first post here and I first looked up to see if my question had already been answered. Don't think so.

Yesterday I was googling to see if I could automate screenshots and came onto a tutorial using a command line (see below).
I used it yesterday and it worked great. What I cannot understand is why it won't today. I just switched my PC off and on again, apart from that I changed nothing.

What it did yesterday: I entered the command line:
C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC>vlc --video-filter scene -V dummy
(also to show you the folder)
It gave me an error message, I forgot what it said, but it worked perfectly. The video WAS displayed on screen also. Caps were saved in the my pictures folder, I chose a ratio of 10. I chose png, 1920X1080. also, when I stopped and resumed, the files kept numbering and did not erase the previous ones.
Today, If I just open VLC (without first using the command line), it works perfectly, displays the IFO file, all vids, etc. I am just talking about opening VLC "regularly"

If I enter the line, it opens VLC without the error message, no vid on screen and the screenshots are empty. I cannot open the IFO file or display ANY video on screen. Meanwhile the screenshots are being generated, all empty.
even weirder: If I open one of the VOB files it will start capturing, while still showing nothing on screen (by the way replacing previous caps although "always write to the same file" is not ticked).

Any idea what's wrong? Let me know if I forgot to give you all the details. I am using 2 screens, if that's of any importance. OS is XP SP3, VLC 1.1.11

Cherry on the cake, edit: this is my work laptop and it kept asking me to reboot because it had just performed some update. After that the problems started.

Thanks,
Jo

Has anyone got this working. Everywhere I look online it says it's possible yet all I get is my video playing and no screenshots anywhere.
