video distoted on play, and all other programs too.

I'am now experincing picture distoted and color out of whack while playing a movie, plus all other windows i open while VLC is opened. It used to work fine, then a couple of nights ago lost control of computer, would not respond to control, alt, delete. so i manually shut it down to regain control! then had this problem. Could it be a virus? or should it be uninstalled and then reloaded? Thx for any help, im all out of solutions.
