Progress of vlc ?

hello

1st i want to say that
vlc is a great player but there are some bugs which do exit a long time and i see no improvement

i reported some month/years ago some mpg files which don't play with vlc but ALL other players
can play them
even in latest nightly builds mpg decoder seem to get no update since a very long time

visualisations are broken since i can remember
in latest 64 bit nighly speed of visualisation is ok but audio still stutters
so using visualisations (without a trick) is impossible

cue file support is broken with ALL nightly builds
its not a major bug but still a nasty one and seems no work has started to fix it
the bug cannot be that big
just compare 1.11 code with 1.20 .... :-)

dvd menus still not work properly on most dvds
the "selection button" is often invisible

i dont want to blame the vlc devs but after month i just see no improvements
in 1.2.0

hope its ok to post my opinion
vlc is still a very good player (with some bugs i want to be fixed :-) )

may be these bugs only occour on windows os...

atm i use k-lite with mpc hc
(better compatibility and picture quality, but it has some bugs too for e.g. audio cd support is bad)

i am thinking of creating an own media player because all existing players have some bugs :-)

First, I cannot observe your claimed problems.

And second, it is really simple. There is no progress because nobody is interested in addressing your problems. You are not fixing them yourself and you are not getting anyone else to fix them for you. I don't really understand what you expect.

may be with linux these problems don't occur
but try the windows nighlty versions

here are some mpg test files i reported months/years ago
(1 contains xxx)

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=WSADHQEB

all files work with mpalyer, mpc and even with wmp
but they don't play with vlc

about cue files with 1.11 cue files work but in ALL 1.20 versions vlc is unable to find the wav/flac file after open the cue file
i opend a ticket like requested but after 2 month still no start to work on it
this problem is anoying but cannot be to complicated to solve

about the visualisation problem
may be under linux it works good but with windows it doesn't
in 1.11 visualisations are too slow and don't match sound output
with 1.20 speed is ok but audio stutters

and dvd support
in most dvds the selection button is often invisible

i don't have the knowledge to fix this bugs
i just reported them and like all users with a problem u want your problem to be fixed :-)
some bugs are major ones some are minor
but these problems will have all windows users not just me

i just see no improvements in 1.20
once a month i try the latest nightly build to test if the mpg files and cue support will work

(like always they dont :-) )

It's not just a question of operating systems. It would be far too easy. There are millions of combinations of processors, video adapters, audio DAC and drivers combinations, and then hundreds of combinations of file formats and codecs. If VLC had crackling sound for all Windows users, there would be many many more complaints.

Besides, I honestly do not really care about your own problems. I am developing VLC on my free time. Yet this year alone, I received over a hundred insult messages from them. So I stopped caring about the users. I am doing this for fun as a hobby. Fixing your problems happens not to be fun in my opinion. Thus I do not feel like solving your problems on my free time. I will also not solve them on my salaried time since I am not allowed to develop VLC during my office hours.

By the way, all of the few VLC developers (5 or something) are hobbyists like me at the moment, though they may be less blunt in writing.

About time that this was made clear again.
If only people generally did such a good job, even on their paid time.

No, it's not my program. It's the program of whomever comes and contributes to the project.

You asked why reported bugs did not get fixed timely, arguably to the point that users may switch to other software.
I answered your question: there is simply nobody to make it happen.

There is another way to put it: I guesstimate the minimum cost of maintaining VLC is about 1 million € yearly (a few software and test engineers plus a manager). Obviously, nobody wants to and is table to spend so much money on VLC.

well u made your statement clear: u don't care about the users
luckily not all software devs think like you
most devs like it when people report bugs because this helps to improve the programm

u said its no fun
well if u get paid or not finding and solving bugs is almost no fun
i know u spend your free time on vlc
but some bugs i reported are very old like the cue and mpg problem and affect all 1.20 users
cant u spend a bit of your time and take a look into cue support and why the mpg files don't work ? :)

vlc is a great player with cue support working again it would be even better 8)
