VLC Crashes and Media Library is lost

I was trying to convert an AVI video to another format and VLC crashed
Ok, no problem I thought, and i just restarted it and allowed it to send a crash report.
But, under what absurdity does that cause one to loose their entire media library
(which is in the file ml.xspf in my application data folder) ?
Because this isn't the first time this happened, i created a backup
copy of the file and kept it in the same folder as the original, and
that was cleared and replaced with an empty copy too.
We know that VLC doesn't save changes to the media library until
it is closed (sorry guys and gals, but that's a serious design flaw),
so this is obviously something that occurred while the player was
in the process of shutting down after having crashed.
Sorry if I sound like i'm complaining, but in the 25 years I've been
coding, I never saw the word 'stable' used to describe something
with defects that cause data loss.
