making an mp3

Hi all. 
Thanks for this great software. I'm new to VLC. I have a .flv file that i made using VLC media player. i'd like to play the audio from the file in my DAW. Is there a way to do this. I have tried making it into an mp3 file, but it comes out as a .ps file that my DAW doesn't recognize. Thanks for your help.
