hi, I've never had this problem with VLC before, but each time I add an album (either dragging files to it, or right clicking on the folder and "play in VLC") it will not play the files in track order, nor does it sort them alphabetically.

I can right click and tell it to sort by ascending track order, but how do I tell it to always load this way?

I'm using ubuntu 11.04 (and EXT4 file system) if that makes a difference. I have used vlc on mac and windows before and have not had this issue.

VLC 1.1 uses the file system (directory list) order. VLC 1.2 uses the alphabetical order.

I don't know what version of VLC I have, whichever you can get in the ubuntu software repository to date.

Is there a way I can make vlc always load items by track number?

No. You'll have to select the track number column in the playlist.
