How to watch downloaded youtube video on VLC1.1.11

Hi I am a new user of the latest VLC media player. I know a similar topic have been posted recently but I believe that one does not involve downloading the youtube videos first, and as I do not have much computer knowledge, I decide that I would open this post.
I have only downloaded VLC media player for two days because I have downloaded some videos from Youtube and did some research, found out that VLC is probably the best media player for .flv files. However, every time I tried to open the .flv files with VLC media player, VLC would only play a few seconds, and will always stopped at the exact same time. Can anyone help me solve this problem?
Here is what I did to download the Youtube videos
1. Downloaded Youtube Downloader
2. Download videos by pasting URL on Youtube Downloader
3. Videos are downloaded on my computer.
4. Downloaded VLC Media Player
5. Chose the recommended settings during installation
6. Open videos with VLC Media Player
7. The player wouldn't play
I was googling this problem, and found some posts that are written a couple years ago on this forum describing the same problem and saying that youtube videos carry a bug that prevents it from playing on VLC media player. Is it still true?
I would really appreciate if any one can help me solve this problem in simple terms.
Thank you
