VLC Server: What are my client options?

Postby jfluckey » 05 Oct 2011 19:14

I am very new to the video streaming game, and I have some questions.

If I am using VLC as my server, can I stream to other software for a client (i.e. browser, Windows Media player, mplayer, etc.)?

What are the differences between the streaming options (http, rtsp, etc.)? I know this is a broad question, so links to some reading to help me understand would be appreciated.

Is the http web interface only for controlling the server remotely, and not streaming to a client?

When I stream a file, it plays without a client connecting to it. So how do I make it so the file plays upon connection and select the file to play? (I am assuming this is where the web interface comes into play)

Ultimate goal: Stream files or capture device to other computers that may or may not have vlc and/or access to client computer's router. I would also like to stream to my android phone.

Thanks for the time anyone takes to answer some or all of these questions.
