It's a known issue with Ogg files.

Bat Totem Player doesn't seem to have this problem...

Sorry to bump this thread, but I believe I have the same issue, in particular I am using the shipping version of VLC on Ubuntu 11.10 x86. On this platform, Totem plays the sample video fine, as does dragging and dropping it into Firefox 4.0+. VLC seemingly solely has problems with it.

Problem for me is I am wanting to use VLC to transcode output from recordMyDesktop - as OpenShot 1.4.2 has problems with the Ogg video files produced by recordMyDesktop. If I can't do this with VLC, I am well and truly stuck!

Sample video, if it's any help: http://www.davekoelmeyer.co.nz/out.ogv

Dave

I should also mention that it's not just "bad time remaining" in VLC, but you can observe jumps in the playback - such that everything appears faster than captured. Again, fine in Totem, Firefox etc.

Dave

Bumping the thread will not magically spawn patches, sorry.

Thanks (I guess) for the terse reply...

However what I'd ideally like to know is:

What's the specific bug? Is there a handy link to it - assuming I'm an end user who would like to sic a developer onto it.
Why does it affect VLC and not the other aforementioned applications? I mean, what's the difference here, in layman's terms?
Is there a timeframe or any sort of priority for patching it?

etc.

That's kind of more what I was hoping by bumping the thread.

Cheers,
Dave

The fundamental problem is that Ogg is a very bad file format. The consequence and actual problem is that VLC has lots of trouble parsing them. And the VLC developers are few and busy.

And the Ogg demuxer code is quite bad, to be honest.
