Unknown issue streaming from Microsoft Lifecam

Hi all

We run a community sports club and we have until recently been using VLC with a feed from a camcorder (via firewire) to show our gymnasts what their routine look like, by pausing the video and playing it back with a time delay.

We recently purchased two Microsoft LifeCams. We were using a DELL Inspiron 1720 which is a fairly old machine, but has 4gb ram and was working fine with the camcorder. The webcam works fine on the LifeCam software supplied with it, but I cannot get it to receive a feed in VLC. VLC lists the LifeCam, and when I select Device Properties, I have tried reducing the resolution, but to no avail.

I have subsequently tried the LifeCams on newer machines in VLC and have no problems whatsoever. I just cant get my head around, why they work in the software supplied by MS, but not in VLC on the older machine.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is it the same version of Windows on the older machine?

Yes, all three machine tested are running Win 7. The older machine has 4gb ram, the others 3gb. What confuses me is that it operates on the older machine in the MS software. Just not in VLC.
