I'm not a developer on the project, so TAKE MY WORDS WITH A GRAIN OF SALT, but from my research in efforts to build my own media center i've come across several problems which interfere with full HDTV support in VLC and media players in general.
While over the air is pretty much standard at the moment, cable and satellite HDTV standards are still very much unstable/under debate.
Despite apparently clear regulations regarding these standards, the manufacturers, broadcasters, and the like are still trying desperately to stall the fcc in their adoption in the hopes the FCC will reform them.
The major problems are:
Current "cablecard" standards are too stringeant for any actual hardware besides TV's to make the cut, meaning no pc cards. Additionally, it doesn't allow broadcasters to give people program guides or VOD/pay-per-view services.
Current restrictions/encryption of most cable signals from set top boxes by demand of the MPAA are not only repelling educated customers, but are sticking in the craws of media center manufacturers such as microsoft, etc..
That same encryption of cable signals means the DMCA/EUCD is violated if VLC could play them, and it's up in the air as to weather you'd be able to access an unencrypted feed from your HD set top box at all.
Because of all the stalling and complaining by manufacturers/broadcasters regarding these standards, experts on the subject believe they will be changed yet again before finally stabilizing, bringing further uncertainty to the hardware manufacturers especially.
The situation is in a greater mess than that.. but that's just the stuff that affects vlc.
In short: it's unpredictable exactly when an HDTV card with cable support would come out, it's unpredictable weather the standard will remain static, and it's unpredictable what would be considered a violation of the DMCA/EUCD.
