Newbie and converstion help please

Hi, in short, I am a newbie and just come accross this site, I am no geek so you are all smarter than I 
I race a horse with a few mates, we are all of the older generation and not really into computers etc etc, it was my duty to record ( legal) the race on a DVD player and then put it in PS Elements, edit it, and then send it out to the boys. fairly simply !
I "upgraded" this week to a Panasonic DMR-XW385 and testing I found that it records fine to the HDD, will copy to the DVD but then I cant play on any other DVD player and it will not also load into PS Elemments
....................It seems I need some sort of converter.......can anyone help please
