converting .ts to mp3?

i have several GB .ts soundfiles loaded from mpeg4 dekoder , setup box .
and vlc playes these fine , but i want to eddit them too, shorten up so i only have back what i want to hear
i want to convert these to mp3 and i have tried with vlc , but it only makes a 0 byte mp3 file and no more
is vlc able to convert .ts sound to mp3 ?
