How to enable 5.1 output on G5? I get silence!

Hello

When I play either a DVD or an AVI with AC3 sound on my G5 with VLC, I get only silence if I want true 5.1 output. Why is that so?

Please don't tell me to use the search engine, because I did for the last 2 hours, the only thing I found was to set the audio device from 0 to 1. This did help, I get sound then, but only in stereo. But what I want is 5.1 surround output, because my G5 is hooked up to a 5.1 receiver via optical cable.

The Apple DVD Player gets me perfect Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound when I try to play my DVDs, but not VLC which I need it to because I have AVIs with AC3 that play neither with DVD Player (of course) nor with the QuickTime player.

Thank you!

Greets

are you sure the G5 supports audio out greater than 2 channels? (i mean without a third party sound card)

Yes, it does (through a combined optical and analog audio output), but VLC does not at the moment. One of the OSX developers is working on it, but he did not release anything yet and I cannot promise that it will be supported in the next release, but I hope so.

Okay, thank you for your answer and your effort, I'm looking forward to seeing the next version of VLC with this problem solved, that would be awesome! (Und Felix, dem Namen nach zu urteilen verstehst du auch Deutsch, darum auch noch ein Danke auf deutsch! :) )

The VLC Team needs a PowerMac G5 for testing to be able to solve the issue with VLC not supporting the optical SPDIF output. A new donation drive has been initiated and there is a "G5-meter" indicating how much is left before they can buy a new G5. Donate via PayPal and enter PowerMac G5 in comments and the money will go to the new G5.

uhm.. I still have a G5 (no G6 yet...) and the audio goes away when I try to play a DVD with it. DVD with DVD player is OK, but I think I would want just the VLC in my dock as it manages to work with everything else. SO. wheat happens is that the audio is GONE. no way to get AUDIO. it trys to go out through the digital output, BUT I have no digital devices. any way this could work RECENTLY?
