Vlc Player process keeps running

After I play a file and close the player the process is still running. If I play 10 files there will be 10 vlc processes running in task manager. It starts dragging on the system after a few ore running. Closing them with task manager doesnt seem to have bad effects but is tedious and bothersome. Any idea why they dont end.
Running VLC 8.1 on Windows XP professional edition.

I know this is an old post, but I am having the same problem. I am running version 1.1.11 on Windows 7 64bit. The process will not end without me manually ending them. If I open 20 movies, I have 20 processes. I made sure that I have the option selected "Only Allow One Instance." Does anyone else have this problem or can anyone help? Thanks.

I used to have this problem on XP w/ some of the older versions of VLC. After upgrading to the current 1.1.11 version the problem went away. I don't have any experience with Win7 yet I'm fairly sure if you were to rollback
version releases one by one you would eventually find a version that doesn't leave the process running after you close the program. Have you tried this already?
