How to convert from a .ps file?

So normally I'm pretty competent with technology, but I'm stumped on this one.

I ripped a DVD on a computer at a library using VLC, which saved it as a .ps file, which I then saved to my home laptop. Since then, the contents of the DVD has been written over, so this is the only copy of it I have. The problem, however, is that I cannot view the file. It's pretty clear there is something there: the file is about 230 mb, and VLC will open it and show that there is about 27 some minutes of footage, but I won't play anything. I've tried changing the extension (a suggestion I found on these boards), but that didn't work. Sorry if there is an answer to this somewhere on these boards, I wasn't able to find anything that worked.

Thanks so much for your help!

A DVD file of 230mb? I doubt it is complete.

I should clarify: the file is a rip of a recording from a mini-DVD, hence the small file size.

I've been messing around with VLC and still haven't stumbled upon a solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

hey powelldm

i converted a mkv file using vlc and it does create ps file and vlc did play it.
i also noticed the file size is misleading. 45mb for the ps file compared to 4.5gb for the source file.

i have been searching on the net re converting the ps file and i read a response somewhere that suggests you can change the file extension from ps to mpg.
additionally if you converted to mp4 and see a ps file replace the ps extension with mp4 and it'll work.
hope this helps.
