I'm having the exact same issue. I'm also using Ubuntu 5.04, but I encountered the same issue with VLC on Mac OS X and WinXP, so I don't think that it's distribution or even platform specific. Here's the command-line that I used:

Code: Select all

vlc -vvv -I telnet test.mpg :sout='#transcode{acodec=MP3,vcodec=DIV3,ab=64,vb=256,width=320,height=240,deinterlace,channels=2}:std{access=mmsh,mux=asfh,url=:8090}' vlc:quit
Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

you have to compile VLC yourself to get mp3 encoding in debian with VLC (the packaged version doesn't include it fot license reasons)
