Audio problem

Postby Michele » 09 Apr 2011 19:38

Hi think Vlc has a functionality or an option that doesn't work well with Realteck sound cards. When I use Vlc with Windows Xp, Windows 7 and even Ubuntu (every version I tested) I can not get a good audio quality.

Precisely: when I play an audio or video file at the beginning I can hear something like a whistle and sometimes there are other audio disturbs (the message log say: audio output is starving).
One of my friends has the same problem, he has a realteck sound card too.

The only way to solve the problem is forcing the audio frequency to 192000 Hz, I've tried other frequencies (44100, 48000) but this seems to be the only to work fine.
This fixes the issue in Windows and Ubuntu.

However I think this is a bug that should be solved.

This problem can happen if audio card clock is faster than that of your computer, or if your card has really high latency.

On Ubuntu, the PulseAudio plugin in VLC version 1.2 can sometimes work around the problem. On Windows, I don't know.

Hi Rémi!
You suggested the solution I talked about when I had this problem on Ubuntu, and now I know it works even on Windows. Thank you again!

However, why is Vlc the only player which has this problem on my systems?

I don't know. It might just be because VLC uses a different -more generic- synchronization mechanism than most other audio-based players.
