What does VLC telnet expect to be sent for the "enter key"?

I need to know if I should configure Windows HyperTerminal to send a CR only for hitting the enter key, or sent both a CR and LF. Please help me, as this might help me figure out why my telnet isn't working with VLC when using HyperTerminal.
