VLC does not start properly when playing Disc 1 of FLCL

When playing disc 1 of the FLCL box set special edition VLC fails to start properly. It just gives a blank still fram. When ordered to the title screen it proceeds normally from that point on.
Disc 2 and 3 both move straight to the title screen without stalling.

Discs 1, 2, and 3 work in Media Player and Power DVD with no problems. However they do not start at the title screen, they play some video first.

This problem may have to do with an error in VLC's attempt to move past ads and intro video to get to the title screen quickly.
