VLC media player won't play RealPlayer streams

Hello,
I'm having a problem with my VLC media player (version 1.1.8 ) in that it will not play network streams that appear to have been intended for RealPlayer (*.ram, *.ra, etc.). The network stream will open, and it will appear to be playing -- but all I get is silence. What's the deal here?
