DTS wav -> SPDIF option disappears!

Hello there,
I'm trying to play a dts-wav file with the VLC player version 0.8.1 and send the output to SPDIF so that my external decoder gets to do the decoding.
 However in the audio menu > audio device > mono/stereo/4.1/5.1 are the only options I get?
 The SPDIF option doesn't exist.

The strange thing is that when I play ac3 movie files, or DVD-video discs it outputs the audio to the external decoder fine and selects SPDIF by itself and of course the external decoder shows dts or dd depending on the movie..

I did a search on the forums and found out that many ppl have this problem but I couldn't find if it was resolved or not?

Thanks,
latebeat

Please have a look at the preferences. There is an option to force SPDIF output. You might need to enable the Advanced-flag to see this option.

Where's that option? I have the option to enable SPDIF when available but I didn't find one to force it?

thanks,

That's actually the one I meant. It triggers VLC to use SPDIF always, if it is available, which is almost like forcing it. VLC will only look for other modules, if SPDIF isn't available, so it is the default output.

Hello,

I got exactly the same problem: If I play AC3 encoded Files, they WILL be played over SPDIF, but if I Play DTS encoded WAV's the "A/52 over S/PDIF" option DISAPPEARS and I can only play over 5.1 or quadra (which actually works).

The SPDIF option is enabled and ACTUALLY it is working, but NOT with DTS WAV's !?

I tried several versions of VLC v0.8 to v0.8.2-test1 and older versions v0.7.3 - there's always no DTS-WAV output over SPDIF available. I tried dozens of different DTS-WAV's, so it's not a problem within the WAV's.

Could someone try a recent nightly build? Please give feedback if it is still broken. Thanks.

I just tried the actual overnight version "vlc-0.8.2-svn-20050602" with five different DTS-WAV's but it has still the same problems (no S/PDIF output option available).

Also, three of the five DTS-WAV's are playing but giving no sound output (total silence). In Version "vlc-0.8.2-test1-win32" all five DTS-WAV's are played correctly WITH sound output (in Mono, Stereo, 2 front 2 rear and 5.1)

Okay, I created a ticket (#174) in our tracker. You can follow the progress on this issue there. Thanks for your feedback.

Same problem with playing a network-video-stream with AC3-audio. I'm missing the "A/52 over S/PDIF" option in this case. I changed the preferences to force SPDIF output but it doesn't matter, option doesn't appear.

I'm using WinXP SP2, version of VLC is 8.1

DTS WAV file over SPDIF

Hi there,

I have the same problem playing DTS wave files. I have a ton of DTS wave files I have built using DVD Audio Extractor and Surecode DTS encoder.

The files are from various DTS CD disks etc and they play on ver 8.1 but what is happening is the the player apears to be decoded the DTS stream, downmix it to stereo and then output it as a standard stereo PCM stream.

There is no play via SPDIF option when playing this type of file. So yes I can listen to these files but they are downmixed to stereo to either the soundcard or the SPDIF output.

I have burned the files to CD's and they play in 5.1 to 100% in all of my players via optical cable to a DTS reciever so I am sure the files are ok.

As well I have no problem with .dts files or .ac3 files playing as 5.1 through the SPDIF output so I am sure the connections and decoding operating properly.

Ideally what there should be is an option to allow abc.wav files to just pass straight to the SPDIF output.

I have also set in the preferences to force playback via SPDIF.

Interestingly on ver 8.2 these same DTS wav files don't play at all, either via the sound card or the SPDIF output.

On another note they did kind of play on ver 7.1 but the data appeared to be garbled.

Please feel free to ask any aditional quesitions.

Cheers,
Paul D.

Ticket #174 was not solved yet (I hope that this happens until the next release in late september), so I regret that there wasn't any progress on this issue.

Has anybody found an alternative player to do this in with Windows? I have a SoundBlaster Live! Platinum going to a Sony DTS/DD decoder/amp via SPDIF. Playing DTS/DD from DVDs works, both foobar2000 and VLC seem to decode the DTS instead of passing it through.

Anybody know any alternatives?

Thanks,

if you want to play DTS files, in 5.1, you have to download VLC v 7.2

There were som legal issues....so it is taken out of the program after this version

At least it work for me...

I was suffering the same severe problem and I think I found the solution at last. Just enter 48000 as a sampling rate in VLC player Audio properties, instead of default value '-1'. After this procedure SPDIF option in Audio device menu re-appeares when listening to DTS wav files...

IT WORKS!!!!!!!!!
Using VLC Player 8.5, I went into Audio/Audio Device (during playback) and selected 5.1. Note that this can only be done during playback, otherwise the Audio Device option is not present.

The funny thing is this: the 5.1 option was already selected by default but would'nt work until I selected A/52 over S/PDIF and then went back to 5.1.

The only problem is now my player keeps reverting to A/52 over S/PDIF, even between tracks.

Anyone got a fix for this???????

Any updates on his issue??
I don't get any audio in my receiver when I play a DTS AudioCD in "A/52 over SP/DIF" mode.
In "5.1" and "Stereo" mode I get 2 channel audio in the Receiver.
I have selected "Win32 waveout extension output" (but its the same with all other selections)
I have tried all versions from 0.7.0 to 0.8.6c (0.7.1 & 0.7.2 support DTS AudioCD.....but not through SPDIF I guess)

well my issue is similar,
I have a creative soundblaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 card which is connected to my Yamaha receiver (via optical)
which DOES decode dts.

I have legally downloaded "The Eagles - Hotel California" dts album which when i extracted, i was given
large files with the .dts extension.
These files work perfeclty using vlc with the SPiDF option activated, the DTS logo
appears on my receiever and i'm getting 6 glorious channels. (Same with DVDs aswell)

However, I dowloaded another album in dts, (Sting - Brand New Day) and endedup with .wav files or
dts wav files which are roughly the same size as the .dts ones.
Now when vlc plays them with the SPIDF option activated...i get dead silence and my receiver starts to flicker
between the two formats which are dts and PCM.

When i try mono, stereo & 5.1 ..i get sound but not true dts surround. I know this because my receiver does
not show the "dts" logo on the screen but instead has the ugly "PCM".

I have tried zoom player, media player classic. media player, power dvd 10, nero showtime, foobar200, kmplayer & have tried them all with the different filters such as ac3 and ffdshow and only get massive amounts of harsh static sound.

.dts files can play perfectly
.wav dts files ..cannot play..(either with static or no sound at all )

PLease help me out and feel free toask me any questions. =)

issue on vlc 1.1.4
