Hello,
I'm working on a how-to for subtitling with Linux and have come upon a problem when overlaying subtitles using the GUI: http://sub.wordnerd.de/linux-subs.html#sec-9_2
I'm running Debian Squeeze and have the VLC 1.1.7 source installed. I looked back at the last year of posts on the forum and couldn't find any mention of this problem.
If I want to overlay subtitles on a film I would proceed as follows:
Select Media > Convert / Streaming, select my video (mpeg2) and subtitles (srt), hit Convert/Save.
If I would want to make an H.264 video with AAC audio, I would select that in the Profile drop down menu and then hit the "Edit selected profile" button.
Unfortunately, here I run into problems on the Subtitle tab. If I check the Subtitle checkbox there, I can only select either "DVB subtitles" or "T.140" subtitles, neither of which work -- whether I have the Overlay box checked or not.
If I decide to make my own profile by hitting the "Create new profile" button, I'm also only given the above two choices.
I did find a work around though. By selecting another preset -- for example, "Video - VP80 + Vorbis (Webm)" --, hitting the "Edit selected profile" button, proceeding to the Subtitle tab and checking the Subtitle box, I was given the option to select a blank line in the Subtitle drop down menu. I could then change the profile to create an H.264 video with AAC audio, and the conversion would work out fine with overlaid subtitles.
While this trick does work, it isn't ideal. Is this a known bug?
Yours, Rob Homsi
