Audio playback, very poor

I'm a bit of a noob so please excuse me if this is a simple fix...

No matter what audio file I am playing with VLC (MP3, OGG, FLAC, etc.) the quality is extremely poor... I've messed around with all the preferences, not much better, reverted back to default, even worse. I know my files aren't corrupt because if I play them with any other media player they are perfectly fine.

I did re-install VLC thinking there was something wrong with the installation, no difference. VLC is fully up to date... This is frustrating because I'd prefer to use VLC over Winamp or windows media player, but I can't seem to get VLC to put out a decent quality sound??? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks for any help, if more info is needed for anyone that is willing to help me let me know, I wasn't sure what other information I should have included...
