Setting the volume from command line?

I have tried the following to set the volume when starting vlc from command line (ubuntu):
vlc file.mp3 --volume 100
I have tried different values of the volume from 0 to 1024 but no effect, it always plays at the same level? What am I doing wrong?
(VLC 1.1.5)
